Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Package for $1595 + gst
Includes trial software and installation
The package is a wonderful low cost opportunity for a small business to upgrade to a server based system.
The software is the Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition .but only operates for 180 days without purchase of a licence. Purchase the licence within 180 days and you get the full system.
If you have 3 or more computers strung together on a makeshift network .this could be a solution for you.
What you get for $1550+GST is the installation or labour costs. The trial server software is free. You will need to provide a separate computer to run the server software. For a small network .a low cost machine with a CD or DVD writer will do.
Are there any other costs involved? Not much, assuming most of the cabling is in place with a router accessing the Internet. The workstations should be of a reasonable standard. If any of your computers are running Windows XP Home edition they will need to be upgraded to Windows XP Professional. Windows 2000 or Windows 98 PCs work okay.
All the PCs (maximum of five for this offer) need to be checked out .and if needed hard drives reformatted and Windows reloaded.
Microsoft SBS is then loaded on the server and all workstations hooked-up and operating as a server based system with a central document store and backup. (Other features are not installed with this basic setup.)
Installation by an experienced operator. Payment after satisfactory installation.
The installation is only available in Auckland , in the CBD & fringe, Western Suburbs or North Shore locations. (Remote locations like Piha & Orewa are not included)
On purchasing the Microsoft Small Business Server Standard software with five client licenses within the 180 day trial period you will need to invest another $1000+gst (approx)

THE BENEFITS OF A SERVER
1.) Having a centralized filing system eliminates the problems of having documents getting lost scattered around different computers. There is also an internal web site which provides a common location where users can work together, share documents, observe recent announcements, contribute to a project or view the company's holiday calendar.
2.) Usually with improvised networks there is no cohesive backup strategy to counter fire or theft. Typically users are responsible for backing up their own data .yeah right! Even if individual backups are carried out, it is time wasting because with a server all the data is backed up simultaneously by one person or automatically overnight.
3.) Most personal computers are setup with a concoction of software. When an ordinary PC is used as a server there is usually no protection against accidental reboots or shutdowns. If you are operating accounting software, problems on the makeshift server will affect all users. Having a clean reliable server with a backup power source solves the reliability issue.
4.) Small Business Server comes with clever features that allow you to easily operate any office computer remotely, via the Internet. It is very convenient if working from home, on vacation or working out of town.
5.) Integrated in the server is fax software. Faxing direct from each computer is a cinch. This extremely useful feature drives a low cost shared modem which logs a record of all transmissions.
6.) A dedicated server also provides much more control over security with very minimal effort and no additional software. Restrictions help stop unapproved software installation and protect against viruses and other attacks. Today with lower costs a server contributes to a more efficient business.
