Howard Carmack of Buffalo, New York, known as the notorious "Buffalo Spammer" once performed for a herbal-stimulant distributor. He received a $10 commission for every jar of herbal stimulant sold through his spam campaign. Carmack sent out 10 million emails promoting the herbal stimulant and generated 36 sales.

Carmack's gross revenue for the project was $360 …a profitable day for the spammer. Working by himself, from home, using spam software purchased over the Internet, Carmack made a nice living. Now for his spam scams he resides in jail. We can observe from this example, why we receive spam …because it pays.

How do we get rid of this curse without any compromise? With the sudden rise in popularity of the Internet and email communication, we all made mistakes in being loose with our email addresses. We gave the spammers too many occasions to harvest our addresses.

In the old world when we shift house we do not have problem with our snail mail …as it is redirected to our new address. We can do the same thing with our email. By creating a completely new identity and getting our mail forwarded to us on a temporary basis. When all our friends and colleagues know our new address we can dump our old one to foil the spammers.

The first thing to do is create a new email identity. It is important to have a long term approach and register a personal or company domain name that you can take with you whenever you need to change Internet providers. There are tons of names available provided you use two words. In fact using two words sometimes gives a better description of your product or service.

You can now go ahead and inform all your colleagues and friends of your new address. In the meantime you put an auto-response or vacation notice on your old address that bounces an automatic message back to the sender. It would read something like this, “Our address has changed, please contact us by this email forwarder yourname@bigfoot.com.”

Bigfoot is an example of a email redirect service or a place to get a disposable address. The basic service is free. By signing up an account with Bigfoot you make sure you that you do not miss any important email. The redirection service forwards your email to your new address. Your new email address is unavailable to the spammers via Bigfoot as you certainly won’t be dishing out your new one to any strangers.

After the redirect has been in place for several months you can drop it. Your original address, if it is a valuable domain name you can keep using it for a website address but disconnect the email part.

Don’t forget in the future you can reintroduce your old email address when the spammers have given up on it. In fact if the redirect works well there is no need to change any business cards or stationery.

How to Get Yourself New Email Address at Low Cost

If you go to one of the big international domain name registrars like godaddy.com (or locally freeparking.co.nz) you can get yourself an email address. To select a suitable address, all that is required is to enter a suitable name in the panel provided on the home page and select an extension like com, biz etc. You will be immediately notified if the name selected is available.

After purchasing a suitable name you can get to work and start setting up your new email system. Login to your new account with the supplied ID and password and you will have several options to choose. Go to Email Account List and here you can get started. What you are effectively doing is forwarding email to your Internet provider for downloading.

This means instead of having to use their common address like yourname@yahoo.com you can use a personalized address. By using this method of redirecting your email, you can change your Internet provider and still hang on to your valuable address.

Click on Manage Email Forwarding on your Email Account page and here you can set up the redirection. There is provision for 100 different forwards per domain name. You will probably use the generic names, like …info, sales etc with the addition of first names like Peter, Bob and Ruth.
